SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York – Michael I. Weintraub, MD, FACP, FAAN, FAHA, of Briarcliff Manor, a senior attending neurologist at Phelps Memorial Hospital, was recently elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA).

Fellowship in the AHA/ASA recognizes excellence in the care of stroke patients and/or stroke- related research and education, with accomplishments that demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the American Stroke Association.

Dr. Weintraub, who served as chief of neurology at Phelps from 1980-2001, is a nationally known expert in stroke care, education and research. In 1979 he organized a nationwide community hospital stroke study that involved CT scan monitoring of stroke patients. The study was intended to determine the effectiveness of then-current drug therapies (aspirin, heparin and coumadin), as well as a novel drug treatment proposed by Dr. Weintraub. After the protocol was submitted to the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Weintraub performed a local stroke study at Phelps, which was subsequently published.

Dr. Weintraub has lectured widely on subjects including the medical/legal issues surrounding the use of TPA (a clot-busting medication) following strokes, stroke in young people and “beauty parlor stroke syndrome.” In 2008 he was an invited guest lecturer at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans and the Advanced Internal Management symposium on cerebrovascular/stroke management in New York City, sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic. In 2009 he was a guest speaker on stroke for the New York State Department of Health.

Dr. Weintraub has written more than 200 papers on stroke, vascular disease and other topics in neurology that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals. He has been a proponent for cardiologists and neurologists working more closely together in the treatment of individuals with TIA (mini-stroke) and stroke-like symptoms. He has written three books and edited several others.

On a local level, Dr. Weintraub is involved in the care and management of stroke in the community. He has served as a consultant and lecturer for the Stroke Center at Phelps since it was established in 2007. In addition to his position at Phelps, he is also a senior attending physician at Westchester Medical Center and Putnam Hospital Center, and he has offices in Briarcliff Manor and Carmel. He has held faculty positions at SUNY-Buffalo, Yale, Boston University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He currently holds two faculty appointments at New York Medical College in Valhalla, as clinical professor of neurology and internal medicine, and is an adjunct clinical professor of neurology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is a 235-bed community hospital with 450 medical staff, representing 34 clinical specialties. Phelps is the exclusive Westchester satellite for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a clinical affiliate of Mount Sinai Hospital. www.phelpshospital.org
