SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York -- Governor David Paterson has proclaimed May 12, 2010 as Health Care Auxilian Day in New York State to recognize the dedicated auxilians throughout the state who annually donate more than five million hours of service to their health care facilities and communities.
Phelps Memorial Hospital Center will honor the work of its auxilians and the support they provide throughout the year by prominently displaying a proclamation celebrating May 12 as Health Care Auxilian Day.
“Our auxilians help Phelps in many ways and we truly appreciate their efforts. They contribute substantially to Phelps being an outstanding hospital,” says Keith Safian, Phelps President and CEO.
Established in 1955, the Phelps Auxiliary is a network of almost 350 men and women who provide volunteer services and participate in fundraising activities to help support the hospital. The Auxiliary raises approximately $150,000 every year for the Hospital. Most recently, their support has helped finance Phelps Hospice, the new emergency department and other capital improvements, and the purchase of medical equipment.
During the past year, the Phelps Auxiliary has donated:
- $90,000 for four wireless GE patient monitors for bedside monitoring
- $10,000 for a McGrath Video laryngoscope to assist with difficult intubations
- $6,000 for the Nursing Promise program, which enables current Phelps employees to pursue a nursing degree while continuing to work at the hospital part-time
- $10,000 for Phelps Hospice
- $25,000 for various other hospital projects
On Saturday, June 19 the Auxiliary will sponsor the first-ever Craft Fair at Phelps, which will be held at The James House Mansion behind the hospital and will feature more than 30 vendors selling jewelry, clothing, pottery, handcrafted handbags, photography and more.
New York State has more than 75,000 health care auxilians who initiate, fund and volunteer for a wide variety of patient and family care services—from outpatient clinics to intensive care units. They sponsor health fairs, blood banks and wellness lectures, raise funds for hospital and nursing home equipment, and organize and underwrite outreach programs in their communities.
