Dr. Shantie Harkisoon, who is board certified in family medicine, has been appointed program director of a family medicine residency program being developed by Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow.

SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York – Dr. Shantie Harkisoon of Forest Hills, NY, has joined Phelps Memorial Hospital Center as program director for a new Family Medicine residency program that is currently being developed by the hospital. A residency provides the clinical training that is required for board certification after physicians have obtained their Medical Degree (MD). New York Medical College in Valhalla will be the sponsoring academic institution for the new residency program, which Phelps plans to implement by 2012.
Dr. Harkisoon, who is board certified in family medicine, has been a member of several family medicine teaching faculties and most recently was assistant program director at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn. Since 2006 she has been assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine at New York Medical College.
Her initial responsibility at Phelps will be to design the program and obtain the approvals necessary for its implementation. Once approval is obtained, she will oversee all operations for the 18-resident program, including curriculum development, faculty appointment and development, recruiting and evaluations.
Although many hospitals in the country offer residency programs in family medicine, fewer than 10 hospitals opened new family medicine programs in the past year.
“Phelps is committing major resources to this program because there is a growing demand for primary care services, and this imperative is clearly highlighted in national healthcare reform initiatives,” says Daniel Blum, a senior vice president at Phelps.
Dr. Harkisoon earned her medical degree at University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington. She completed an internship and residency in family medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and a faculty development fellowship at Beth Israel’s Institute for Urban Family Health in Manhattan. She is a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Phelps Memorial Hospital has been expanding its role as a teaching hospital over the past several years. In 2009, Phelps and New York Medical College announced an affiliation agreement under which medical students, residents and fellows from the college participate in training programs at Phelps, and the number of these programs continues to grow.
