SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York – The Hudson Valley/Metro NY District of KeyBank recently contributed $40,000 to fund two programs at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center that promote careers in healthcare and healthcare education. The first of these programs, called Healthcare Career Pathways, is designed for area high school students to expose them to a variety of healthcare professions. The second, called Nursing Promise, enables current Phelps employees to work part-time while pursuing a nursing degree.
KeyBank is the major sponsor for the Healthcare Career Pathways program at Phelps. Hundreds of high school students at Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Ossining high schools have participated in Healthcare Career Pathway programs at Phelps which consists of:
- Career Day - a four-hour program for freshmen that includes hands-on activities in a mock-hospital setting
- Summer Camp - a one-week program for sophomores that includes a four-hour CPR class and a First Aid course
- Exploration Program - a 20-hour program for juniors and seniors, in which students observe and assist nurses in the hospital setting
- Nursing Assistant Course - for recent high school graduates. Upon completion of the course, students are qualified to apply for nursing assistant positions at Phelps
KeyBank is also a sponsor for the Phelps Nursing Promise program, an innovative nursing education program that helps hospital employees balance home life, work and school while they pursue a nursing degree. The Nursing Promise program offers qualified candidates part-time employment, tuition reimbursement and continued healthcare coverage. In return, employees who participate in the program must commit to completing their education within two years, either an Associate’s degree in nursing or the final two years of a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Upon graduation, the employees must also agree to work at Phelps full-time for a minimum of two years.
“Nursing shortages have been an ongoing struggle for many hospitals across the state, and administrators and nursing leadership have needed to adapt and adopt innovative programs to address this problem that affects the quality of life for everyone in our region,” says Michael Orsino, president, Hudson Valley/Metro NY District, KeyBank. “That is why in addition to promoting careers in healthcare, KeyBank is especially proud to support Nursing Promise, which provides the opportunity for hospital employees to further their education, expand their careers and continue to serve patients with the skill and compassion that is the hallmark of Phelps Hospital.”
“This is true community spirit,” says Lucy C. Engelhardt, RN, Vice President Nursing Services at Phelps. “This support from KeyBank sustains a pipeline to meet the growing need for healthcare workers and provides employment for members of our local community.”
