SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York – Phelps Memorial Hospital Center recently received a grant of $100,000 from New York State for an upgrade and renovation of its newborn nursery. The funding was secured through the efforts of State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District - Westchester County).

“We greatly appreciate the support of Senator Stewart-Cousins to help us meet the need for medical services for infants in our community, which has increased significantly over the past 10 years,” said Keith Safian, president and CEO of Phelps. “This extraordinary funding has been used to purchase a nurse call system, medical equipment and materials to renovate the existing space.”

“Working with Phelps, an outstanding community hospital, it was apparent to me that we needed to find the resources to ensure that mothers who deliver at Phelps are not separated from their premature or at-risk newborns because of a lack of space, equipment or technology,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “I am grateful to Keith Safian, as well as to all of the members of this outstanding healthcare institute, for their commitment to this project, which will have an immensely positive impact on the health and wellness of our community.”

In addition to its 15-bed Well-Baby Nursery, Phelps has a four-bed Special Care Nursery, where it offers quality medical care to premature infants born as early as 34 weeks and newborns who are ill and require hospitalization. The establishment of the Special Care Nursery in 2007 has resulted in a 50% reduction of the need to transfer premature and high-risk babies to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Westchester Medical Center. This benefits families who deliver at Phelps, allowing many infants to remain closer to home.
