CROTON FALLS, New York – French comic master Moliere’s “The Imaginary Invalid,” a 17th century farce on the very timely subject of healthcare, will be the final mainstage play of the season at The Schoolhouse Theater. “The Imaginary Invalid” runs from May 27 through June 20 and will be directed by Schoolhouse artistic director Pamela Moller Kareman.
Originally presented in 1673, this comic masterpiece is about a wealthy and miserable hypochondriac named Argan whose imaginary illnesses and very real wealth attract a wide array of quacks. In response, Argan ingeniously devises his own healthcare plan: he will marry off his daughter to a geeky medical student whose father is a doctor so that he will never have to pay for healthcare again. Outlandish trickery and silliness abound in this hilarious blend of satire and slapstick.
Actor John Tyrrell, who was on Broadway in the original cast of “Equus” as well as in “The Merchant” and “The Miser,” will play the part of Argan. Tyrrell has been in a number of Schoolhouse productions, including “The Crucible” and Tennessee Williams’ “The Kingdom of Earth.” He most recently appeared in a Cape May Playhouse production of “Proof.”
Movie, television and theater actress Allyce Beasley will play the wacky maid Toinette. The Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated Beasley is best known for her role as the rhyming receptionist Agnes DiPesto from the hit television series “Moonlighting.”
Also new to the Schoolhouse is John Schuman, who has appeared on Broadway in plays including “La Cage Aux Folles” and “13 Rue De L’Amour” and off-Broadway in “Moonchildren” and “Hot L Baltimore.” Most recently he was in the cast of “The Taming of the Shrew” at The Shakespeare Theater in Washington, DC.
Bruce Sabath, who was in the cast of the Tony-Award winning 2006-2007 Broadway revival of “Company,” will play Argan’s brother, Beralde. Sabath, a Katonah resident, was Uncle Eddie in the 2008 Schoolhouse production of “Lost in Yonkers.”
The geeky medical student Thomas Diaforus will be played by Israel Gutierrez, who debuted at The Schoolhouse in March as the very engaging and nerdy love interest in the theater’s most recent mainstage play, “Kimberly Akimbo.” Other returning members of the Schoolhouse ensemble are Quinn Cassavale, Neal Mayer and Sari Caine.
“The Imaginary Invalid” opens on Thursday, May 27 at 8 pm, with additional performances May 28-30, June 3-6, 10-13 and 17-20. Tickets are $30 on Thursdays and Fridays, $32 on Saturdays and Sundays. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm. Sunday performances are at 4 pm.
The Schoolhouse is a unique setting for the arts in Westchester. Built in 1926, the brick building served as an active school until 1976. Galleries exhibit many fine local artists, while the theater, where every seat feels like a front-row-seat, accommodates enthusiastic audiences of less than 100. Theatergoers enjoy the intimate quality of the space, as well as the all-Equity casts who bring theatrical excellence and experience from Broadway to Croton Falls.
A regional Equity theater, The Schoolhouse is dedicated to presenting professional theatrical performances by award-winning playwrights. The New York Times has called The Schoolhouse “Westchester’s sole claim to consistent, professional theater, where people can see plays they are not likely to see elsewhere.” North County News writes “There’s nothing like live, intimate theater, and you won’t regret discovering The Schoolhouse Theater’s many charms that have earned it acclaim well beyond its environs.”
The Schoolhouse is located at 3 Owens Road, Croton Falls, NY, just off exit 8 on I-684. For information and reservations, call 914-277-8477. Visit the Schoolhouse on the web at
