CROTON FALLS, New York -- The Schoolhouse Theater kicks off its 11th anniversary season on October 15 with “Rose,” a one-woman show by award-winning playwright Martin Sherman. Starring Broadway actress Annie McGreevey in the title role, “Rose” will be directed by Jamie Winnick of Hastings.
Inspired by the true story of Sherman’s maternal grandmother, “Rose” is an immensely personal and totally absorbing story of an 80-year-old survivor looking back on her remarkable life, from birth in a shtetl in the Ukraine to the Warsaw Ghetto to the America of today. “Rose” is a magical piece of writing, with world events filtered through the eyes of this feisty, funny, wise and indomitable Jewish spirit. The play had a very successful run in London, where it was nominated for an Olivier award for best new play in 2000.
“Rose” opens on Thursday, October 15 at 8 pm, with additional performances October 16-18, 22-25 and 29-November 1. Tickets are $30 on Thursdays and Fridays, $32 on Saturdays and Sundays. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm. Sunday performances are at 4 pm.
Annie McGreevey has appeared in many Broadway productions, including “Sweet Charity,” “Annie,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Company.” Her most recent television appearances include “Law and Order SVU,” “Law and Order” and “Six Degrees.”
The Schoolhouse is a unique setting for the arts in Westchester. Built in 1926, the brick building served as an active school until 1976. Galleries exhibit many fine local artists, while the theater, where every seat feels like a front-row-seat, accommodates enthusiastic audiences of less than 100. Theater-goers enjoy the intimate quality of the space, as well as the all-Equity casts who bring theatrical excellence and experience from Broadway to Croton Falls.
Last season’s Schoolhouse hit, “Dinner with Friends,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Donald Margulies, was lauded by The New York Times for being “played with exceptional finesse” by Schoolhouse veterans. “Biography,” another widely acclaimed Schoolhouse production from last season starring Broadway actress Tracy Shayne, is moving to Off Broadway in November. This timeless 1932 comedy by S. N. Behrman will run from November 20 through December 19 at The Mint Theater.
Over the years, The New York Times has called The Schoolhouse Theater “Westchester’s sole claim to consistent, professional theater, where people can see plays they are not likely to see elsewhere.” The Schoolhouse is a regional Equity theater, dedicated to presenting professional theatrical performances by award-winning playwrights.
Schoolhouse Theater subscribers save 15% off single-ticket prices and can enjoy a whole season (three shows) of professional theater for less than the cost of a single orchestra seat in Manhattan. In addition to “Rose,”this season’s plays include the absurdist comedy “Kimberly Akimbo,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, running March 4-28, 2010, and “The Imaginary Invalid,” a hilarious 17th century play about a wealthy and miserable hypochondriac written by French comic master Moliere, running May 13 through June 6, 2010.
