WHITE PLAINS, New York --- Looking for an exciting day trip this fall? Take the train or drive to the Westchester Craft Show at the Westchester County Center October 16-18. This extraordinary show and sale is a 30-minute train ride on Metro-North from Grand Central to White Plains, or an easy drive from New York City and all points in the NY Metro area.
One of the premier juried shows of its kind in the nation, the Westchester Craft Show features stunning wearable art, as well as fine contemporary crafts for the home and office all under one roof. The pleasures of owning, wearing, and decorating with beautiful handcrafted art will lure serious and casual collectors to this show, where more than 100 of America's finest contemporary craft artists exhibit and sell their work.
Each artist at the Westchester Craft Show creates a mini-gallery setting for visitors to explore. With the artists on hand, show goers will also have the opportunity to talk with them about their work. "Part of the enjoyment of the Westchester Craft Show is getting to know the people who create the art you use and love," says show organizer Betsy Kubie of Crafts America.
Among the categories of fine craft that will be on display and for sale are: wearables, such as exquisite jewelry and innovative clothing, hand-blown glass, sculpted metals, delicate porcelain, rustic earthenware, unconventional baskets, wood-turned vessels, supple leather goods, hand-loomed rugs, fine furniture and much more.
"Beautiful crafts add elegance and sophistication to our surroundings," says Kubie. "Color, light, texture, imagination and technical skill combine to present us with things that are unique to wear, stimulating to live with and a delight to own."
Tickets on Friday include admission to two special programs, which this year will focus on how the “green” movement has affected the world of fine craft and interior design. During the first program, at 11:30 a.m., ceramic artist Dan Finnegan of Fredericksburg, Virginia will present “21st Century Pottery: In the Studio and Off the Grid,” a discussion of current eco-friendly trends and their impact on the creation of his functional ceramic pottery.
At 1:30 p.m., Susan Cozzi, an ASID interior designer based in Boca Raton, Florida, will present "Slow Design: Making Eco-Friendly Choices When Designing Your Home." She will discuss the slow approach to home design, which promotes quality over quantity, reducing the distance items must be transported, and choosing fine craft made by artsts who use local or recycled materials from American sources.
Admission to the 16th Annual Westchester Craft Show is $12 for adults and $10 for senior citizens. Show hours are Friday, October 16, 10-6; Saturday, October 17, 10-6; and Sunday, October 18, 11-5.
The Westchester County Center is conveniently located at the intersection of Routes 119 and 100 at the Bronx River Parkway, exit 5 off I-287, within easy walking distance of the White Plains train station.
